Self Assessment

Self Assessments Tax returns affects individuals, partnerships and trustees who receive tax returns, together with companies that are not resident in the UK and are not trading in the UK through a permanent establishment.

It also affects individuals who do not receive a tax return, but need to claim a tax relief or allowance and companies making claims outside their company tax returns.

If you are an employee and your employer is withholding PAYE on your salary then there is no need to submit personal tax returns as long as you do not have any additional source of income.

If you are requested by the HMRC to submit a personal tax return you must adhere strictly to the demand, failing which you may end up paying penalties.

The due date for submitting the self assessment tax returns are before the 30th of September if you are doing paper filing and 31st of January if you are filling online.

Payment on account:

Payments on account are normally required from any taxpayer who is assessed to income tax, in any amount, for the preceding tax year. This is the case even if the assessment has not been made at the time the payments on account are due.

Usually the taxpayer is automatically required to make two payments on account towards the tax due for any year and then a third and final 'balancing payment' to meet any tax still outstanding at the 31 January next following the year of assessment.

The first payment on account is due on 31 January of the tax year in question (ie the usual filing date for the preceding year's return). The second payment on account is due on the following 31 July, and any balancing payment on the next 31 January (ie the usual filing date for that year).

Payments on account are not due where the relevant amount is less than:

  • a fixed amount of £1,000, or
  • the proportion the relevant amount bears to the assessed amount is less than 1 to 5.

So if more than 80% of the assessed tax is met by income tax deducted at source no payments on account are required.
